Brian’s approach to ballet technique makes room for the freedom of modern thought within classical parameters. Artistic investigation is encouraged in the execution of dance steps. Attention is given to independent and positive thinking, to the realization of potential (for the individual as well as the step), risk-taking, virtuosity through musicality, and tension-free movement through a continued focus on breath. The class, while eschewing negativity, challenges the dancer to venture beyond habits of the mind and body, to remain open and willing, and to take ownership of the creation of art. Principles of yoga and Gyrotonic, such as the use of breath, alignment, physical awakening, and the orderly direction of the mind are prevalent throughout the class.
Brian danced with Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet, Dwight Rhoden/Desmond Richardson’s Complexions, and Karole Armitage’s Armitage Gone! Dance where he also served as Rehearsal Director.
