Ilona Copen, founder, and the Board of Directors of New York International Ballet Competition, are pleased to announce the appointment of Jacques Burgering as Executive Director of NYIBC.   Ilona Copen, founder and Executive Director until 2009, will remain as advisor.

A firm believer in dance education, Burgering recognizes that NYIBC “is all about educating and mentoring young, talented dancers.”   Commenting on the fact that dancers from all over the world participate in NYIBC, Burgering comments: “I love that we provide an opportunity for cultural exchange through dance, between American audiences, international dancers, and between the participants themselves.”

Jacques Burgering, a native of the Netherlands, holds a Doctorandus degree in Socio-Economic History from the Rijks Universiteit Utrecht, and a Master’s Degree in Dance & Dance History from American University in Washington DC.   As a dancer, he performed nationally and internationally, most notably with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, Liz Lerman’s Dance Exchange, Chen & Dancers, and the Blue Wing Dance Company, which he co-founded.   He has presented his research on Lucas Hoving at several conferences,  been New York correspondent for Dans, a Netherlands Dance Magazine, and written dance reviews for local newspapers.

Burgering was Artistic Director of the National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs, NY, from 2002 to 2004, and served as the Education and Development Director of both Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, Tivoli NY, and Cornfielddance.   He has also taught dance, dance history, and Tai Chi in colleges, community centers, and dance studios in the U.S. and abroad.   In 2008 he worked as the Assistant Institute Director with the Jose Limon Dance Foundation, and more recently in the Planned Giving Department of Human Rights Watch.

Mr. Burgering assumed his duties the beginning of 2010 and, with the NYIBC staff, is preparing for the next Competition scheduled for June 2011 at the Rose Theater, NYC.
